The Greek Tragedy Series

Medea

2020/5/14

Under the spell of love, Medea the Princess of Lolan, decided to elope with the Prince of Da Yuan Jason. Medea was so madly in love with Jason that she slew her elder brother who tried to stop them. During their long and hard journey to find a shelter, Medea gave birth to a boy and a girl.

The play begins when, years later, the homeless family arrives at Tunhuang. In the hope to gain security and power for himself, Jason intends to marry the daughter of the Lord of Tunhuang, and allows his wife and children to be exiled from the place. On the day of their exile, Medea tries to enlist the sympathy from the Lord, who finally grants her request to postpone their departure. Just when Medea is at the nadir of her spirits alone comes the King of Yueh-Chih who laments over the fact that he is heirless. In exchange for a permanent asylum in Yueh-Chih, Medea gives the king the magical Golden Bough, which she has stolen from the palace of Lolan before the elopement, and which will help the King to beget offspring.

Then, Medea persuades Jason to ring along their two children to see the bride, and to beseech her to let the children stay in Tunhuang with their father. Unaware of Medea’s gruesome plot, Jason appears before the bride with his son and daughter who present the unsuspecting maiden a poisonous robe as a wedding gift. The bride dies the instant she puts on the robe, and so does the Lord of Tunhuang who holds his precious daughter in his arms. To inflict more pain on Jason, Medea mercilessly kills her own children. In the end she takes flight via underground with the aid of black magic, leaving Jason with nothing but unending remorse.
