Waiting for Godot

One evening, by a country road, near a willow tree on a slope, two tramps, Estragon (Gogo)and Vladimir (Didi), are waiting for Godot. They do not know Godot or why they await him,and are not sure when he will come. Bored and restless while they wait, they do anything to pass time—they even contemplate hanging themselves but do not know how to proceed. At last, they forget what they are waiting for.

The smug Pozzo appears with his slave Lucky comes across the two tramps. Curious,Estragon and Vladimir make Pozzo order Lucky to think. Lucky starts to ramble and his long monologue drives the listeners crazy. Together they pull off Lucky’s hat to stop histhinking and talking, and Pozzo bades the two tramps farewell.

Godot’s messenger comes to tell Estragon and Vladimir that Godot is not coming today but will certainly arrive tomorrow. The boy leaves. The sun sets and the moon rises. Darkness falls. Estragon and Vladimir decide to come back to the spot and resume their vigil next day.

Next evening, same time, same place. The tree has sprouted four or five leaves. The two tramps return and continue to wait for Godot. Just like the day before, they pass the time by singing, playing and amusing themselves by cursing each other.

Pozzo, now blind, reappears with Lucky, and falls to the ground with his slave. Loudly, he cries for help from Estragon and Vladimir, but they hesitate and start to negotiate the price. They finally help Pozzo get back on his feet, who claims Lucky is mute, and together they stumble away. Seeing them off, Vladimir contemplates if there exists any truth in what transpired while Estragon is still trying to take off his boots .

Godot’s messenger boy appears, but he does not remember having seen the two tramps before. He tells them Godot is not coming tonight, but is sure to come tomorrow. Vladimir yells at the boy angrily. Scared, the boy runs away. The sun sets and the moon rises.

Darkness falls. Estragon and Vladimir tell themselves to go, but they do not move......
