Synopsis
An amateur troupe formed by some guildsmen plan to stage a play in celebration of the duke’s forthcoming wedding.
On the way back to court from hunting, the duke and the duchess are stopped by Egeus, who complains against his daughter Hermia and her lover Lysander. He beseeches the duke to force Hermia to marry Demetrius.
Lysander and Hermia decide to run away and tell their friend Helena. To please Demetrius, Helena tells him the news. Demetrius then goes into the woods to look for the couple.
In the woods, the king and queen of the fairies are arguing over a boy. To ridicule the queen, the king asks Puck to anoint her eyes with the love juice from pansies, and also to settle the problems of the young lovers.
The troupe rehearses in the woods. Puck transforms the tailor into an ass, with whom the queen falls in love. Puck’s mistakes with the love juice also cause comical confusion among the lovers.
In the end, the king of the fairies realizes the true meaning of love. Four days have passed. With joy, people celebrate the duke’s wedding as well as the unions of the two young pairs.
The king and queen of fairies descend to bless the mortal couples, wishing them happiness and prosperity.
